MPs Back May’s Poll Call

  • Britain is set to go to the polls in the first week of June as majority of MPs backed Prime Minister Theresa May’s call to hold a general election in early June. A total of 522 MPs voted in favour of the motion while 13 votes against the motion, this easily exceeded the two-thirds threshold needed for the government to be able to overrule legislation that had required elections to be held at regular five-year intervals.
  • Ms. May reiterated her reasons for holding an election, insisting that political divisions in Westminster risked weakening Britain’s hand in the negotiations with Europe.

China Renames Six Places in Arunachal Pradesh

  • Beijing renamed six places in Arunachal Pradesh as these names reflect China`s territorial claim.
  • The official names of the six places are Wo`gyainling, Mila Ri, Qoidengarbo Ri, Mainquka, Bumo La and Namkapub Ri.
  • Beijing asserted that the move is legitimate and appropriate, and stated that these names are passed down by ethnic minority groups who have long been living and working in the region, and they have been calling these places as such for generations.
  • These names reflect from another angle that China`s territorial claim over South Tibet is supported by clear evidence in terms of history, culture and administration.

Petitions to Annul Referendum

  • According to local media, Turkey's top election authority rejected opposition petitions to annul a key referendum on expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's powers after complaints of vote-rigging.
  • Ten members of the Supreme Election Board (YSK) decided against annulling the vote, while only one member voted in favour.

Corporates Show Interest in Sahara Properties

  • A large number of corporates, including Tatas, Godrej, Adani and Patanjali, have shown interest in buying embattled Sahara group's 30 properties estimated to be worth about Rs. 7,400 crore.
  • The properties, mostly land parcels being auctioned by real estate consultant Knight Frank India, have also generated interest from several real estate developers including Omaxe and Eldeco, as also from HNIs and at least one public sector firm Indian Oil.

Yes Bank Q4 Net Zooms

  • Yes Bank reported a 30.2 per cent rise in net profit for the last quarter of 2016-17, even as its bad assets swelled.
  • Total income (standalone) of the bank grew 29.4 per cent.
  • However, the asset quality of the bank slipped, with gross non-performing assets (NPAs) or bad loans rising to 1.52 per cent of gross advances as on March 31, 2017.

New Exoplanet Discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered a new exoplanet which is about three times more massive than Jupiter, orbiting a star 21,000 light years away from Earth.
  • The team found that MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb is a super-Jupiter planet with the mass of about 2.8 Jupiter masses.
  • MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb orbits its host at a distance of about 1.67 astronomical unit.

India's Request to Stage the Group Matches in Delhi

  • World football governing body FIFA is evaluating India's request to stage the group matches of Under-17 World Cup involving the national team in the national capital.
  • On the advice of the Sports Ministry, the All India Football Federation has requested FIFA to allot India's group matches to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here even though the world body had last month announced that the matches of Group A would be played at Mumbai's D Y Patil Stadium.
  • Under the usual practice, the host country of a FIFA tournament is placed in Group A. The Under-17 World Cup will be held in six cities -- Kolkata, Margao, Navi Mumbai, Kochi, Guwahati and New Delhi -- from October 6-28.

Babri Masjid Demolition

  • The Supreme Court revived the conspiracy charges against Bharatiya Janata Party L. K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti in the politically sensitive 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case.
  • The SC order is a huge setback for Advani as reports were doing rounds that the BJP patriarch was the front-runner for the presidential post.

Ban on Red and Blue Beacons

  • The Union Cabinet has decided that beacon light will be removed from all vehicles, including that of Prime Minister from May 1.
  • However, emergency vehicles, like ambulance, can continue to use red or blue beacons.
