G7 Stands United on Syria

  • Foreign Ministers of the G7 countries and several other West Asian countries spoke with one voice, condemning last week’s chemical attack in Syria. The U.S. and its allies hold Syrian President Bhashar al-Assad responsible for the attacks.
  • While the G7 united to isolate Mr. Assad diplomatically and urged Russia to do the same, no agreement was reached on sanctions against Russia.
  • The G7 countries called on Russia and Iran, who have a responsibility, as allies of the Syrian regime, to use their influence to ensure Syria’s compliance with all of its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Ties with the US Worst Since Cold War

  • As per Russia’s Foreign Ministry, relations between Russia and the US are at their worst since the Cold War ended.
  • Moscow blamed the prior US administration, headed by Barack Obama, for the deterioration in ties between the two superpowers.
  • Obama did everything possible to worsen bilateral ties, but Russia hoped that Tillerson's visit would be productive in this regard.

Malala Yousafzai Receives Highest UN Honour

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres designated Malala Yousafzi as the youngest-ever 'Messenger of Peace'.
  • With the designation, Yousafzai joins other current Messengers of Peace including Oscar-winning actor Leonardo di Caprio for climate change, actor Charlize Theron, whose focus is prevention of HIV and elimination of violence against women and actor Michael Douglas whose focus is disarmament.
  • UN Messengers of Peace are distinguished individuals, carefully selected from the fields of art, literature, science, entertainment, sports or other fields of public life.

UK Birds Face Extinction Risk or Steep Decline

  • According to a new report on the state of the UK’s birds, more than a quarter of UK birds, including the puffin, nightingale and curlew, require urgent conservation efforts to ensure their survival.
  • Since the last review in 2009, an additional 15 species of bird have been placed on the “red list”, a category that indicates a species is in danger of extinction or that has experienced significant decline in population or habitat in recent years.
  • The total number of species on the red list is now 67 out of a total of 247.

Passenger Vehicles Sales Growth

  • According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Passenger, vehicles sales grew at the fastest pace in six years in 2016-17.
  • Sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market grew 9.2%.

Vedanta Completes Cairn Merger

  • The merger of Vedanta, the local arm of the LSE-listed Vedanta Resources, with Cairn India has completed. The merger boosts Vedanta's revenues to $9.7 billion and its market value to $15.6 billion.
  • Vedanta will preserve the Cairn brand for the oil & gas production business.
  • A key benefit of the merger is that Vedanta will get access to Cairn India's cash books, which it could use in reducing debt.

One of the Most Ultra Distant Galaxies

  • Astronomers have discovered one of the most distant galaxies in the universe that belongs to about 13.1 billion years in the past, a period just 700 million years after the Big Bang.
  • These ultra distant galaxies, seen as they were close to the beginning of the universe, are interesting because they fall within the "Epoch of Reionisation," a period about a billion years after the Big Bang when the universe became transparent.
