Reopening of Afghan Border

  • Pakistani Prime Minister ordered the reopening of the border with Afghanistan after 34 days of blockade.
  • The border was sealed by Pakistan following a spate of deadly attacks in the country which the officials blamed on militants belonging to banned organisations hiding on the Afghan side of the border.
  • Pakistan still has reservations that terrorists from Afghan soil are planning and conducting attacks in Pakistan. Mr. Sharif hoped the Afghan government would take measures to eliminate the reasons for which the borders were closed in the first place.

The World’s Happiest Country

  • According to the World Happiness Report 2017, Norway is the world’s happiest country.
  • Other top countries on the list included Nordic neighbours Denmark and Iceland, as well as nearby Switzerland.
  • The rest of the countries in the top ten are: Finland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden.
  • The World Happiness Report 2017 was released by the United Nations on the International Day of Happiness. It is the fifth such report since the first was published in 2012.

Cabinet Clears GST Draft Bills

  • The Cabinet cleared four supporting GST legislations, paving the way for their introduction in Parliament.
  • The four supporting legislations, the Compensation Law, the Central-GST (C-GST), Integrated-GST (I-GST) and Union Territory-GST (UT-GST) would be introduced as Money Bill.

Idea and Vodafone Announce Merger

  • Idea Cellular board approved merger of Vodafone India Ltd and its wholly-owned arm Vodafone Mobile Services with the company, a move that will create the country's biggest telecom services provider with a customer base of over 394 million.
  • After their merger, the firms announced Kumar Mangalam Birla as the Chairman of the new entity.

Reliance Communications and Aircel Merger

  • Reliance Communications received the approval of the Competition Commission of India for the demerger of its wireless division into Aircel Ltd. and Dishnet Wireless Ltd.
  • Reliance Communications and Aircel had in September announced the merger of their wireless operations to create a combined entity with assets worth Rs. 65,000 crore.
  • The company has already received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India as well as from the stock exchanges BSE and NSE for the deal and has filed an application with the National Company Law Tribunal for the same.

Dragon Cargo Spacecraft Returns to Earth

  • SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft returned to Earth, marking the end of the company’s tenth contracted cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS) for NASA.
  • The Dragon cargo craft returned to the Earth with approximately 3,600 pounds of science experiments and other gear from space station.

Roger Federer Wins Indian Wells Masters Title

  • Roger Federer claimed a record-equalling fifth ATP Indian Wells Masters title, defeating Stan Wawrinka.
  • With this triumph in the all-Swiss final, Federer joined Novak Djokovic as the only men to win five Indian Wells titles, adding to those he won in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.
