China Inducts J-20 Stealth Fighters

  • China has inducted J-20 stealth fighters in its arsenal, marking a solid incremental step in the transition of its air force to the next level.
  • As per reports, only a small number of J-20 jets have been produced on account of engine problems.
  • China is also focusing on the development of its Navy, though its offensive punch is still limited by the presence of only one aircraft carrier, which is mainly used for training purposes.

World's Oldest Crocodile Eggs Discovered

  • Researchers have discovered the world`s oldest crocodilian eggs that they believe were laid almost 152 million years ago.
  • The eggs, discovered in cliffs in Portugal, were laid by close relatives of "true" crocodiles, a group called crocodylomorphs.
  • The fact that they are from the Late Jurassic period makes these eggs the oldest crocodilian eggs known so far.

Direct Tax Receipts Climb

  • Net direct tax collections up to February grew 10.7% as compared with the same period of the previous financial year, while net indirect tax collections increased 22.2% during the same period.
  • According to a government statement, the direct tax collections up to February 2017 continue to show a steady growth trend.
  • During February 2017, net indirect tax collections grew 8.4%, with customs, central excise and service tax collections growing 10.9%, 7.4% and 7.6%, respectively.

India's Foreign Exchange Reserves

  • India's foreign exchange reserves rose $1.2 bn to reach $364 bn.
  • Buoyed by a strong domestic market and a stable Rupee the central bank has been buying foreign currency in order to strengthen its foreign exchange reserves.
  • India has also been receiving a strong intake of investments from foreign investors.
  • According to data from NSDL, Rs. 22654 crore has been pumped into the Indian markets by foreign investors.

Chandrayaan-1 Detected Orbiting the Moon

  • As per NASA, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, India's first lunar mission and which was generally considered lost, has been detected orbiting the moon.
  • The discovery was made by NASA scientists with new technological application of interplanetary radar.
  • Chandrayaan-1 was launched successfully on October 22, 2008.
  • As per ISRO, the satellite has made more than 3400 orbits around the moon until the mission was concluded when the communication with the spacecraft was lost on August 29, 2009.

Kanungo Appointed as DG of RBI

  • The government appointed B. P. Kanungo as a deputy governor of RBI.
  • Kanungo, who will take over from R. Gandhi next month, has been given a three-year term.
  • He was handling the foreign exchange department, government and bank accounts and internal debt management.
