Two-state Solution Remains Only Way

  • As per the UN envoy for the West Asia peace process, the two-state solution remains “the only way” to meet the aspirations of the Palestinians and Israelis.
  • The council met to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after President Donald Trump stepped back from the U.S. commitment to a two-state solution as part of a final peace deal.

Tunisia Extends 2015 State of Emergency

  • Tunisia has extended for another three months a state of emergency in place since a 2015 jihadist attack.
  • The state of emergency has been in place since a November 2015 jihadist bombing in Tunis that killed 12 presidential guards on a bus.

Earth Has a New Guest

  • There has been another addition to the number of continents in the Earth. Scientists claim to have unearthed a new continent which they named 'Zealandia'.
  • As per scientists, the 5 million square kilometer landmark east of Australia is a continent and this theory is backed by satellite data and rock samples.
  • Zealandia includes the regions of New Zealand and New Caledonia and is believed to be mostly submerged.

India’s Newest Private Airline

  • India’s newest private airline, Zoom Air, launched its daily scheduled operations. The airline began with its commercial services with a flight to Durgapur via Kolkata from New Delhi.
  • The regional airline became the 12th operational domestic carrier to enter the country's aviation sector.
  • The airline received the schedule operating permit from the DGCA on February 3.

Foreign Investors Allowed to Buy Shares via Primary Markets

  • SEBI has allowed foreign investors to acquire shares through primary markets in depositories and clearing corporations.
  • Prior to this, foreign investors could acquire shares of depositories and clearing corporations only through secondary market.
  • The move comes at a time when Central Depository Services Limited is preparing to launch its initial public offering.

Vikas Swarup Appointed as Indian Envoy to Canada

  • Vikas Swarup has been appointed as the High Commissioner of India to Canada. He served as the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • He had earlier served at the Indian diplomatic missions in Turkey, the United States, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Japan.
  • Swarup had joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1986.

Tamil Nadu Gets New Chief Minister

  • E. K. Palaniswami, a close confidant of AIADMK leader V. K. Sasikala, was sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
  • He has to prove his majority within 15 days.
  • Besides Palaniswami, 30 other cabinet ministers were also sworn-in.
