Five-year Suspended Jail Term for Alexei

  • Top Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was found guilty of embezzlement and given a five-year suspended sentence that threatens to end his bid to challenge President Vladimir Putin in a presidential poll next year.
  • According to Navalny`s lawer, Navalny`s suspended sentence will run out in about 18 months as he already served most of the five years sentence prior to the retrial.

Brexit Bill Set for Final Vote in Parliament

  • The UK Parliament is set to discuss and vote on a crucial bill which will give Prime Minister Theresa May the authority to officially trigger Brexit and start negotiations for leaving the 28-member European Union.
  • The European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill will have its final debate and vote to allow the Prime Minister to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to begin a two-year period of negotiations for the UK's new deal as a non-member of the European Union (EU) by 2019.

Permission for US Ground Operations Withdrawn

  • As per a media report, with civilian casualties incurred in the first commando raid authorised by President Donald Trump, Yemen has withdrawn permission to the US to run ground operations on its soil.

FDI in Manufacturing Sector Climbs

  • As per the government, the manufacturing sector has received FDI equity inflow worth $16.13 billion during April-November period of this financial year. It shows an increase of 82% compared to corresponding period of previous financial year.

Cash Withdrawal Limit

  • As per the Reserve Bank of India, the weekly withdrawal limit for savings accounts will be increased from Rs. 24,000 to Rs. 50,000 from February 20 while there will be no limit on withdrawal from March 13.
  • These limits were imposed in November last year after the government announced a ban on old high-value currency notes, and began to replace them with new notes.

Interest Rates Kept Unchanged

  • The Reserve Bank of India for the second time in a row opted for a status quo in its key rates but shifted the stance of the monetary policy from 'accommodative' to 'neutral'.
  • The RBI monetary policy committee voted 6-0 to keep the repo rate at which it lends to the system at 6.25 percent, marking its third straight unanimous decision since being established in September.

Maritime Patrol Aircraft Test-fires Anti-ship Missile

  • The Indian Navy's maritime patrol aircraft Ilyushin 38 Sea Dragon carried out a successful anti-ship missile firing on a target ship in the Arabian Sea.
  • This was the aircraft's maiden firing post-midlife refit and modifications.
  • The firing was conducted as part of the ongoing annual Theater level Readiness and Operational Exercise (TROPEX-17).

Contempt Notice to Calcutta HC Judge

  • Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar issued a contempt notice to Calcutta High Court Judge C. S. Karnan for continuously levelling allegations against his Madras High Court counterpart and other judges.
  • The top court also ordered that no judicial and administrative work be given to him.
  • The Supreme Court asked the Registry to send across a copy of the order to Justice Karnan, who would have to return all judicial and administrative files in his possession to Calcutta High Court's Registrar.
