Washington Told Not to Build Military Depots in Philippines

  • President Rodrigo Duterte has accused Washington of building depots in the Philippines to store live ammunition, warning that he would abrogate a bilateral treaty if the United States is indeed building permanent structures on Philippine soil.
  • In the Visiting Forces Agreement signed by both countries, there is a provision citing that no permanent facilities should be built on the Philippine territory.
  • The Philippine constitution bars the presence of foreign military bases, troops, or facilitates on Philippine soil.

Reliance Defence Bags Contract

  • Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd has signed Rs. 916 crore contract with the Defence Ministry for design and construction of 14 fast patrol vessels for Indian Coast Guard.
  • RDEL is a wholly-owned arm of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd.
  • RDEL emerged winner through a competitive bidding process undertaken by Ministry of Defence with participation from almost all the private sector and public sector shipyards namely, Larsen and Toubro, Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Goa Shipyard Ltd, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), the company said in a statement.

ATM Withdrawal Limit from Current Accounts Withdrawn

  • RBI announced lifting of restrictions on daily withdrawal of money from ATMs and from current accounts but the weekly limit of Rs. 24,000 on savings bank accounts will continue.
  • The central bank also withdrew cash withdrawals from current accounts or cash credit accounts or overdraft accounts with immediate effect.

Trinamool to Boycott Budget Presentation

  • As per a statement by the party, the Trinamool Congress MPs will not be present in Parliament on the first two days of the Budget session on January 31 and February 1.
  • This decision had been taken on two counts — in protest against demonetisation and the illegal arrest of its Lok Sabha leader Sudip Banerjee and another MP Tapas Paul in connection with the Rose Valley chit fund scam.

Delhi Gets New Police Chief

  • Amulya Kumar Patnaik, currently a Special Commissioner, has been appointed the Delhi Police Commissioner.
  • He succeeds Alok Kumar Verma, who became the CBI chief this month.
  • Patnaik was one of the front runners for the top post along with two other senior officers, Deepak Mishra and Dharmendra Kumar.
