Trump Signs Appointments

  • Mr. Trump waived off a federal law requiring military officers to wait seven years before serving as Defence Secretary, paving the way for Gen. James Mattis to take over the post. He also signed several other appointments, and exchanged banter with Republican and Democratic lawmakers.

Turkish Parliament Approves Presidential System

  • The Turkish parliament approved a constitutional reform bill overnight including strengthening the powers of the presidency, paving the way for a referendum expected in the spring which could see President Tayyip Erdogan in office until 2029.
  • As per Erdogan, the reform will provide stability in the European Union candidate country at a time of turmoil and prevent a return to the fragile coalitions of the past.

  • The third edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit closed with proposals worth Rs. 2.35 lakh crore being received by the State government.

  • The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project attained its maximum capacity of 1,000 MWe.
  • It’s a great moment for the KKNPP, which is already successfully operating its first unit. After successfully crossing a range of tests, the second reactor reached the milestone of generating 1,000 MWe.

Chandu Babulal Chavan Returned to India

  • Sepoy Chandu Babulal Chavan, who had inadvertently crossed into Pakistan in September, returned to India via the Wagah border.
  • The news of the crossing over of 22-year-old soldier had emerged just hours after India claimed in September to have carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control on terror camps.
