Special Treatment for Cuban Migrants Ends

  • Barack Obama is terminating the 22-year-old policy that has allowed Cubans who arrived to the United States without visas to remain in the country and gain legal residency, an unexpected move long sought by the Cuban government.
  • Effective immediately, Cuban nationals who attempt to enter the United States illegally and do not qualify for humanitarian relief will be subject to removal, consistent with U.S. law and enforcement priorities.

Thailand Set to Amend Constitution

  • Thailand’s military-ruled legislature on Friday approved constitutional changes desired by the newly enthroned king that would reserve more powers for him.
  • One change made by the National Legislative Assembly allows King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun to decide whether or not to appoint a regent when he travels outside the country.
  • As per the government the changes solely concern royal powers.

Hero MotoCorp Enters Argentina

  • India’s largest two wheeler maker entered the Argentine market with its 125 cc bike ‘New Glamour’, the first ever global introduction of the company’s product outside the country.
  • In a bid to increase its global footprint and match rival Bajaj Auto, the company has drawn up plans to be present in 50 global markets by 2020. It is already operating from 35 nations.
  • Hero is targeting to capture most of Latin American, African and South East Asian markets by 2020 before entering the matured U.S. and European markets.

Trade Deficit Narrows in December

  • India’s trade deficit narrowed to $10.36 billion in December 2016, the lowest in the last three months, as exports expanded year-on-year for the fourth consecutive month and outpaced imports.
  • Exports in December 2016 posted a 5.72% year-on-year growth to $23.88 billion.

Zakir Naik’s NGO Moves HC

  • Islamic preacher Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation moved the Delhi High Court challenging the immediate ban put on it by a Centre’s notification under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
  • In a petition before Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva the NGO objected to the ban order being promulgated with immediate effect.

Sports Ministry Revokes IOA Suspension

  • With the Indian Olympic Association claiming that the proposal to appoint Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala as life presidents never passed muster, the Sports Ministry followed up on its promise of revoking its suspension of the body.
  • The government has decided to revoke the suspension of deemed recognition of IOA with immediate effect in the light of the corrective action taken by them in reversing its earlier decision making Shri Abhay Singh Chautala and Shri Suresh Kalmadi life presidents of IOA.
