Turkey to Extend State of Emergency

  • As per reports, the Turkish parliament approved to extend the state of emergency for another three more months.
  • Turkey had declared a state of emergency in July 2016.
  • Under emergency rule, the government can bypass the parliament to enact new laws and limit or suspend rights and freedoms.

Robert Lighthizer Named as US Trade Representative

  • President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Reagan-era lawyer Robert Lighthizer as US trade representative.
  • Lighthizer was deputy US trade representative when Ronald Reagan was President in the 1980s.

Britain's European Union Ambassador Resigns

  • Ivan Rogers, Britain's ambassador to the European Union, resigned just weeks after he was criticised over a leaked.
  • Rogers was appointed to the role of permanent representative by David Cameron in 2013.

Carbon Capture Breakthrough

  • A plant at the industrial port of Tuticorin is capturing CO2 from its own coal-powered boiler and using it to make soda ash – aka baking powder.
  • The firm behind the Tuticorin process says its chemicals will lock up 60,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
  • Debate over carbon capture has mostly focused until now on carbon capture and storage.
  • The Tuticorin plant is said to be the first industrial scale example of carbon capture and utilisation.

Paytm Gets Licence to Launch Payments Bank

  • Leading digital payments app Paytm has been granted licence by the Reserve Bank of India for Payments Bank and is likely to start operations next month.
  • Paytm Payments Bank will be the second one to be set up in the country after Airtel Payments Bank launched its pilot bank in Rajasthan in November 2016.

Hero MotoCorp Sales Decline

  • Hero MotoCorp, the country's biggest two-wheeler maker, saw sales decline for the second month in a row as volumes shrunk by a significant 34% in December.
  • According to numbers released by the company, sales in December were at 3.3 lakh units against nearly 5 lakh units in the same month in 2015.
  • Hero sales had fallen by 13% in November 2016 on total volumes of 4.8 lakh units.

Municipal Schools to Switch to English Medium

  • The State government issued a GO for converting all the existing Telugu medium municipal schools into English medium schools from Class 1 to 10 irrespective of the student and teacher strength, with immediate effect.
  • However, it will not be applicable to Class 10 for the academic year 2016-17.

Anshu Jain Joins Cantor Fitzgerald

  • Anshu Jain has been appointed as president of Cantor Fitzgerald LP.
  • He had stepped down as co-chief executive of Deutsche Bank a year ago.
  • Jain will help expand Cantor Fitzgerald's business in Asia, among other markets.
  • Cantor has four main business lines Capital Markets and Investment Banking, Wholesale Financial Brokerage, Real Estate Brokerage and Finance, and Private Equity.
