South Korean Ruling Party Splits

  • Dozens of South Korean lawmakers have left the country's conservative ruling party over a corruption scandal surrounding impeached President Park Geun-hye in a move that could shape the presidential elections that might take place in just months.
  • The 29 anti-Park lawmakers who left the Saenuri Party planned to create a new conservative party that will likely try to lure outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as its presidential candidate.

Government Cancels FCRA Licences of NGOs

  • The government has cancelled the FCRA licences of 20,000 NGOs for violation of laws, thus barring them from receiving foreign funds.
  • Now, only 13,000 NGOs in the country are legally valid.

  • Competition Commission has cleared the proposed purchase of 2 per cent stake in handset maker Micromax by Madison India Opportunities Trust Fund besides three other deals involving different companies.
  • It also gave its nod to ICU Medical Inc buying drug major Pfizer’s hospira infusion systems business.

Samit Gohel Shatters Many First Class Records

  • The Gujarat opener Samit Gohel shattered a host of records with his huge runathon score at Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Odisha. The young batsman scored a record breaking 359 not out.
  • He surpassed a 117-year-old record previously held by Bobby Abel, who had scored 357 for Surrey against Somerset at the Oval in 1899 to register the highest score by an opener in first-class cricket.
  • Samit now holds the record of the fourth highest score in Ranji trophy along with legendary Vijay Merchant of Mumbai.

Kalmadi and Chautala Appointed Life Presidents of IOA

  • Suresh Kalmadi and Indian National Lok Dal leader Abhay Singh Chautala have been appointed life Presidents of Indian Olympic Association.
  • Kalmadi served as IOA President from 1996 to 2011 and Chautala served as President of IOA from December 2012 to February 2014.

Bihar Cabinet Approves 50% Quota

  • The Bihar Cabinet announced 50 per cent reservation for members of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, other backward classes and minorities in the judicial services in the state.
  • The decision reserves 21% quota for aspirants belonging to Extremely Backward Class, 16% for members of Scheduled Caste, 12% for Other Backward Class and 1% for Scheduled Tribe.
  • The state government also announced 35% quota for women in all categories.
