US Returns Land Occupied by its Military Bases

  • The United States returned to Japan the control of 4,000 hectares occupied until now by its military bases on the southern island of Okinawa.
  • This is the largest return of US-occupied land since 1972, when Japan regained the administration of Okinawa, where 240,000 people died during the Second World War and which had been controlled by the US ever since.

Sun Pharma to Buy Drug from Novartis

  • Sun Pharma has announced plans to acquire branded oncology drug, Odomzo from Novartis for an upfront amount of $175 million.
  • The agreement has been signed between subsidiaries of both companies and will conclude after anti-trust clearance and further closing conditions.
  • The transaction gives Sun Pharma its first branded oncology product, and extends its commitment in dermatology.

World's First Solar Panel Road

  • France has opened what it claims to be the world’s first solar panel road.
  • A 1km (0.6-mile) route covered with 2,800 sq m of electricity-generating panels was inaugurated.
  • It cost €5m (£4.2m) to construct and will be used by about 2,000 motorists a day during a two-year test period to establish if it can generate enough energy to power street lighting in the village of 3,400 residents.

ICC Cricketer of the Year

  • Ravichandran Ashwin received the ICC Test Player of the year and Cricketer of the Year awards for the year 2016.
  • He became the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Cricketer of the Year.

ICC ODI Team of the Year

  • After missing out on a place in ICC's Test Team of the Year 2016, Virat Kohli has been named as the captain of the 12-member ODI Team of the Year including four South Africans, three Australians, three Indians (including Kohli) and one player each from England & West Indies.
  • The full squad is Virat Kohli (captain), David Warner, Quinton de Kock (wk), Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers, Jos Buttler, Mitchell Marsh, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Starc, Kagiso Rabada, Sunil Narine and Imran Tahir.

  • Najeeb Jung resigned from the post of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
  • The decision came amid a protracted bitter confrontation with the AAP government.
