Russian Ambassador to Turkey Shot Dead

  • A gunman shot dead Russia`s ambassador to Turkey while he was visiting an art exhibition in Ankara.
  • Ambassador Andrey Karlov and three other people were wounded in the attack.
  • The incident came after days of protests in Turkey over Russia`s role in Syria, although Moscow and Ankara are now working closely together to evacuate citizens from the battered city of Aleppo.

Sanctions against Russia Extended

  • The European Union extended for another six months economic sanctions against Russia over its intervention in Ukraine.
  • The Council prolonged the economic sanctions targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy until 31 July 2017.
  • The sanctions target the financial, energy, and defence sectors and items that could be used for both industrial and military means.

I-T Act Change to Help Small Firms

  • The Centre will amend the Income Tax Act in Budget 2017 to reduce the rate of deemed profit from 8 to 6 per cent for small firms with a turnover of less than Rs. 2 crore who receive their payments electronically.

SAIL in Talks with Nippon Steel and Kobe for Tie-ups

  • Steel Authority of India Ltd is in talks with Japan's Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp and Kobe Steel Ltd for potential technical agreements to help the firm expand its global footprint.
  • SAIL plans to raise output of saleable steel in the year starting April 2017 by about 10 percent to 16.5 million tonnes.

First Biological Pacemaker Developed

  • Scientists have developed the first functional pacemaker cells from human stem cells which can regulate heart beats with electrical impulses.
  • The findings show how human pluripotent stem cells can be coaxed in 21 days to develop into pacemaker cells.
  • These human pacemaker cells were tested in rat hearts and were shown to function as a biological pacemaker, by activating the electrical impulses that trigger the contraction of the heart.

  • Amid a political slugfest over Lt General Bipin Rawat's appointment as the next chief of the Indian Army, the Narendra Modi government has defended its decision citing his outstanding track record, operational experience and dynamism.
  • According to the Defence Ministry sources, Lt Gen Rawat was found to be the best suited among the serving Lieutenant Generals to deal with emerging challenges.
  • Rawat's "outstanding" track record and familiarity with the functioning of the Army Headquarters and MoD were one of the main reasons for his selection.
