Third Richest Year for IPOs

  • The year 2016 was the third-best since 1989 for initial public offers (IPOs) in terms of total funds raised.
  • Data from Prime Database, show that a total of 25 companies entered the capital market with their IPOs to raise a cumulative sum of Rs. 25,163.33 crore in 2016. This is the third-highest quantum raised in a single calendar year after 2010.

Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016 Approved

  • The government approved the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016, a move aimed at bringing greater efficiency and professionalism in governance of ports through full autonomy in decision making.
  • The Union Cabinet approved the proposal of the Ministry of Shipping to replace the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963 by the Major Port Authorities Bill, 2016.
  • This will empower the major ports to perform with greater efficiency on account of full autonomy in decision making and by modernising the institutional structure of major ports.

Pair of Newborn Planets Spotted

  • A team of scientists has found evidence of a pair of newborn planets orbiting a young star.
  • Scientists claim that each planet is about the size of Saturn.
  • The host star is roughly five million years old and about twice the mass of the Sun and located about 400 light-years from Earth.

First Legislative Action in Winter Session

  • For the first time since the winter session began, the Rajya Sabha saw a legislative action as it passed the Disabilities Bill.
  • The Disabilities Bill, passed just three days before the Parliament session ends, aims at securing and enhancing the rights and entitlements of disabled persons.
  • The bill also gives effect to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and related matters.

Pakistan Successfully Tests Babur Cruise Missile

  • Pakistan Army successfully test-fired an enhanced version of an indigenously-designed cruise missile that can hit targets at 700 km with all kinds of warheads.
  • The missile is part of Babur Weapon System version- 2 because it is enhanced version of the earlier missile.
  • The missile is equipped with state-of-the-art navigational technologies of Terrain Contour Matching and all time Digital Scene Matching & Area Co-relation, which enables it to engage various type of targets with pinpoint accuracy even in the absence of GPS navigation.
