Nikki Haley to be US Ambassador to United Nations

  • President-elect Donald Trump announced that he will nominate South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as US ambassador to the United Nations.
  • An Asian-American with little previous foreign policy experience, Haley was the first woman to be picked for Trump`s cabinet, injecting a measure of diversity in a group that until now has consisted solely of white men.

Military Intelligence Pact between South Korea and Japan

  • South Korea and Japan signed a military intelligence pact to share sensitive information on the threat posed by North Korea`s missile and nuclear activities.
  • The South Korean government went ahead with the deal despite opposition from some political parties and a large section of the public.

Airtel Opens India's First Payments Bank

  • Airtel Payments Bank has rolled out a pilot of its banking services in Rajasthan.
  • Airtel Payments Bank is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel.
  • As per the company, customers in towns and villages across Rajasthan will now be able to open bank accounts at Airtel retail outlets, which will also act as Airtel banking points and offer a range of basic banking services.
  • With this, Airtel Bank becomes the first payments bank in the country to go live.

Ramco Signed a Deal with Brunei’s Largest Bank

  • Ramco Systems has signed a deal with Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, Brunei's largest bank and flagship Islamic financial institution.
  • Cloud software provider Ramco beat global vendors to secure the contract with BIBD. The partnership marks Ramco's entry into Brunei and strengthening of presence in South East Asia.

Punjab Assembly Elections

  • As per Congress Punjab unit chief Captain Amarinder Singhs, Navjot Kaur Sidhu and former hockey Olympian Pargat Singh will join the Congress.
  • Navjot Kaur Sidhu had resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party in October. She represents Amritsar East constituency in the Punjab assembly.
  • Pargat Singh is a former hockey player and was earlier associated with the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab. He represents Jalandhar Cantt constituency in the assembly.
