EU Extends Schengen Border Controls

  • The EU extended border controls in the passport-free Schengen area for three months, missing an end-of-year deadline to scrap emergency checks brought in during the migrant crisis.
  • Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and non-EU Norway are all allowed to continue the checks which they first introduced in 2015 as a wave of refugees and migrants streamed across Europe.

Destruction of Japan's Coral Reef

  • According to a report, major destruction of Japan's coral reef is caused due to climate change, especially the rise in temperature this season.
  • The reef, located in front of Ishigaki island in Okinawa and protected as a natural reserve, boasts over 70 coral species and is considered one of the oldest and largest in the northern hemisphere.
  • Ninety-seven per cent of the corals have undergone bleaching and 56 per cent have died, according to astry study which analysed the reef between September and October.

SBI Q2 Profit Plunges

  • Country's largest lender SBI recorded 99.6 per cent dip in consolidated net profit for the September quarter.
  • Provisioning for non-performing assets (NPAs) or bad loans on group basis rose nearly three-fold during the quarter under review.

India and Japan Sign Civil Nuclear Agreement

  • India and Japan signed the long-awaited civil nuclear agreement.
  • According to a joint statement issued after the summit, the two Prime Ministers welcomed the agreement, which reflects a new level of mutual confidence and strategic partnership in the cause of clean energy, economic development and a peaceful and secure world.
  • The agreement provides for the development of nuclear power projects in India, thus strengthening energy security of the country.
  • Apart from Japan, other countries with which India now has civil nuclear agreements include the US, Russia, Australia, Canada, France, Britain, South Korea, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Namibia and Argentina.

Indian Navy has Concluded a Major Operational Exercise

  • The Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy has concluded 'Paschim Leher'
  • a major operational exercise, conducted in the Arabian Sea.
  • The nine-day long exercise tested the combat readiness of the Command at sea, including mobilisation and operational synchronisation.
  • The exercise also saw participation of Indian Air Force, with a number of aircraft, and Indian Coast Guard units.
