Russia to Destroy Chemical Weapon Stockpile

  • As per reports, Russia will destroy all of its chemical weapons by the end of next year, a year earlier than previously announced.
  • As a signatory of the international Chemical Weapons Convention, Russia already has destroyed about 93 per cent of its chemical weapons.
  • Russia had to build several plants in the past two decades to dispose the world’s largest chemical weapons arsenal.

United States Abstain from Voting in UN on Cuba

  • For the first time in 25 years, the US has abstained from voting on a UN resolution seeking an end to crippling trade embargo imposed by America against Cuba.
  • In a near unanimous action, the General Assembly adopted the resolution in which India along with 190 other countries voted in favour while the US which had been opposing it for 25 years cast an abstention along with Israel.
  • For more than 50 years, the United States had a policy aimed at isolating the government of Cuba.

World's Largest Marine Reserve Created

  • A remote and largely pristine stretch of ocean off Antarctica has received international protection, becoming the world's largest marine reserve as a broad coalition of countries came together to protect 598,000 square miles of water.

Strategic Stake Sale in PSUs Given In-principal Approval

  • The Union Cabinet gave in-principle approval to the proposal of NITI Aayog for strategic stake sale in over a dozen PSUs.
  • A list of public sector units has been prepared by NITI Aayog where the government can sell its majority stake to private companies in order to bring in greater efficiency and professionalism in functioning.

Trade, Transit Pact with Bhutan Gets Approval

  • The Cabinet has approved a new agreement on trade, commerce and transit between India and Bhutan.
  • The pact provides for a free trade regime between two countries, and duty free transit of Bhutanese merchandise for trade with third countries.
  • The agreement was renewed in July 2006 for ten years. The validity of this agreement was extended in July 2016 for one year or till the new agreement comes into force.

  • Arvind Kejriwal's party AAP has agreed to offer the post of Deputy Chief Minister to Navjot Singh Sidhu in case the latter decides to join hands with Delhi's ruling party.
  • Even the Congress is trying hard to woo the cricketer-turned-politician.
  • As per reports, Kejriwal's party has also promised to give five seats to Sidhu's newly formed 'Awaaz-e-Punjab.'
