Yemen Truce Comes into Effect

  • A ceasefire took effect in war-ravaged Yemen, under a United Nations plan, as warring parties face mounting pressure to end more than 18 months of fighting.
  • As per the UN special envoy for Yemen, the ceasefire is for an initial period of 72 hours, subject to renewal.
  • It is the sixth attempt to end the bloodshed since a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in 2015 to support the government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi after rebels overran much of Yemen.

Canadian Solar Buys Two Suzlon Projects

  • Canadian Solar, one of the global solar power majors, made its first investment in India's alternate energy sector by acquiring 49% stakes each in two projects of Suzlon Energy for an aggregate amount of Rs. 26.4 crore.
  • The Nasdaq-listed company with a market capitalisation of $880 million has the option to buy the rest of the 51% stake in each of Suzlon's 15-megawatt projects one year after the projects turn commercially operational.

Kochi Declared as World Cup U-17 Venue

  • Three years after identifying a city stadium as a possible football World Cup venue, a high-level FIFA delegation cleared it to be considered for holding 2017 U-17 World Cup.
  • As per tournament director Javier Ceppi, Kochi becomes the first Indian city to be officially declared as one of the venues to host the next year`s U-17 World Cup.
  • The deadline fixed for making the venue foolproof for the tournament is March 2017.

India to Get Second Nuclear Submarine

  • After protracted negotiations, Russia has agreed to lease a second nuclear submarine to India in a deal which will cost around $2 billion.
  • The deal was struck during the meeting between Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS meet in Goa.
  • The Akula 2 class submarine is expected to arrive in Indian waters in 2020-21.
