India, Russia Ink Pact To Set Up 25 Irradiation Centres
Agreement was signed between the Indian Agricultural Association, Hindustan Agro Co-Op Ltd (HACL) and United Innovation Corporation (UIC), a subsidiary of ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia.
It will be implemented through a joint venture and aims to set up 25 integrated irradiation centres.
These irradiation centres will use the technology and technical solution based on gamma-facility and/or electron accelerator.
HFC-23 is a by-product of HCFC-22 (Hydrochloroflurocarbon-22), which is used in industrial refrigeration.
The move will potentially check emissions of HFC-23 equivalent to 100 million tonnes of CO2 over the next 15 years.
Indian Companies have to internalise the cost of this environmental externality, and create sufficient storage facility to take care of down time and run the incinerators.
