Colombia and FARC Sign Historic Peace Deal

  • The Colombian government and the leftist FARC rebel force signed a historic peace accord to end a half-century conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.
  • The signing followed a four-year process to end Latin America`s last major armed conflict. The accord remains to be ratified in a referendum next week.

EU Launches Programme to Issue Cash Cards

  • The European Union launched a programme to issue monthly electronic cash grants to benefit a million refugees in Turkey, as part of a deal under which Ankara will curb the numbers trying to enter Europe.
  • The Emergency Social Safety Net will give refugees pre-paid cards for food, housing, schooling or medical expenses in Turkey.
  • Earlier this year, EU countries approved a fund of 3 billion euros to help Turkey improve living conditions for some 3 million Syrian migrants on its territory.

Govt. to Shut Down 15 Loss-making PSUs

  • The government has decided to shut down 15 loss-making public sector units, of which at least five have been cleared by the cabinet, while opting to go against internal advice and revive three state-run companies.
  • As per reports, there were another half-a-dozen sick public sector companies, which had been identified by NITI Aayog for closure.
  • The NITI Aayog, tasked with preparing a roadmap for ailing PSUs, had submitted two separate lists of sick and loss-making PSUs, one comprising those that can be closed down and the other of those where government can divest its stake.

FlexiLoans Ties up with Four e-commerce Platforms

  • Digital lending company FlexiLoans Technologies, which operates flexiloans.in, has partnered with four new e-commerce platforms, Flipkart, Grofers, Wydr and The Secret Label, to cater to the seasonal working capital needs of their associated small and medium businesses.
  • With these partnerships, FlexiLoans aims at strengthening its presence in the SMB segment and will have access to over one million merchants selling on its partner platforms.

Eight Satellites Successfully Placed in Their Orbits

  • ISRO successfully completed its longest and one of the most complex space mission. This historic launch deployed eight satellites including SCATSAT-1weather satellite in two different orbits. With this, India successfully completed yet another multiple satellite launch in a single rocket mission.
  • With this success, India has successfully launched 79 satellites for international customers.
  • This was also PSLV's longest launch spread over two hours and 15 minutes.

  • Indian cricket team made their 500th Test memorable as they thrashed New Zealand by 197 runs in the opening Test of the three-match series played at Green Park.
  • Ravindra Jadeja, who picked six wickets and scored valuable 92 runs, was adjudged Man of the Match.

New Director Generals for CISF, NSG and NDRF

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved new Director Generals for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
  • According to a release, O.P. Singh will be the next chief of the CISF.
  • Sudhir Pratap Singh will head the NSG, in addition to his current assignment of Additional DG of CRPF.
  • R.K. Pachnanda, will head the NDRF.
