Diplomatic Dead End for Sharif’s Kashmir Project

  • Nawaz Sharif's Kashmir project has suffered a diplomatic check at the UN general assembly, with Pakistan failing to gather international support against India.
  • In fact, Pakistan's campaign against India's actions in the Kashmir valley over the past few months did have some effect internationally. But the Uri attack reversed all of that for Pakistan, which saw international support draining away as India's narrative of Pakistan-exported terror gained currency.

Afghanistan Inks Peace Deal with Warlord

  • Afghanistan signed a peace agreement with warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, paving the way for him to make a political comeback despite a history of war crimes and after years in hiding.
  • Hekmatyar, who heads the now largely dormant Hezb-i-Islami militant group, is the latest in a series of controversial figures that Kabul has sought to reintegrate in the post-Taliban era by granting judicial immunity for past crimes.
  • The deal with Afghanistan`s second-biggest militant group marks a symbolic victory for President Ashraf Ghani.

Mukesh Ambani India's Richest Person for 9th Year

  • Mukesh Ambani has yet again topped Forbes’s annual list of India’s 100 richest tycoons.
  • Ambani, with a net worth of $22.7 billion, is followed by India’s richest pharmaceutical magnate, Dilip Shanghvi, with a net worth of $16.9 billion.
  • According to Forbes, the combined net worth of India's 100 wealthiest is USD 381 billion, a rise of 10 per cent from USD 345 billion in 2015.

Wipro Consumer Care Buys Chinese FMCG Firm

  • Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100 per cent shareholding of Zhongshan Ma Er Daily Products Limited, a Chinese Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company.
  • The acquisition will be done through its Singapore business Wipro Singapore Pte Limited. Through the buyout the FMCG arm, Wipro Enterprises is looking at strengthening its presence in fast growing South China’s personal care business.

L&T Bags $100 Million Order

  • Larsen & Toubro has bagged a $99.7-million contract from Vietnam Border Guard to design, construct and supply high-speed patrol vessels.
  • The contract also provides L&T to transfer design and technology along with supply of equipment and material kits for construction of follow-on vessels at a Vietnam shipyard.
  • The contract provides for supply of 12 vessels. These would be delivered over 30 months.

Planet Orbiting Two Stars

  • The US space agency NASA has found a planet that orbits two stars in the system.
  • Astronomers have confirmed the existence of a planet orbiting pair of stars in the system OGLE-2007-BLG-349, located 8,000 light-years away towards the centre of our galaxy.
  • The planet orbits roughly 300 million miles from the stellar duo and completes an orbit around both the stars roughly every seven years.

New Indian Ambassador to US

  • India's High Commissioner to Britain Navtej Sarna has been appointed as the next Ambassador to the US as that country prepares for a presidential transition.
  • He takes charge after Arun Kumar Singh retired last month-end.
  • Both Sarna and Singh are former Indian ambassadors to Israel.
