Turkey and the US Ready to Work on Ousting IS

  • As per Turkish President, Washington and Ankara are ready to work together to push Islamic State jihadists out of their de facto capital of Raqa in northern Syria.
  • Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad's regime were pushed out of Raqa, which lies on the Euphrates River, in 2013, making it the first provincial capital in Syria to fall out of government control.
  • Ousting IS from the city would be a turning point in the conflict and mark a huge blow to the jihadists.

Protests against New Brazilian President

  • Protests against new Brazilian President Michel Temer are taking place in several dozen cities across the country.
  • The biggest protest is in Sao Paulo, the country's financial capital.
  • Temer took power last week after President Dilma Rousseff was removed from office by the Senate for breaking fiscal responsibility laws in her management of the budget.

  • Poaching is a widespread industry growing at a fast pace and this practice is promoting the already flourishing business of illegal wildlife trade.
  • Officials at the International Union for Conservation of Nature's global conference have confirmed that the majestic species of Eastern Gorillas (Gorilla beringei) now faces the risk of disappearing completely, with just 5,000 left.
  • Four out of six of the Earth's great apes are now critically endangered, only one step away from going extinct, including the Eastern Gorilla, Western Gorilla, Bornean Orangutan and Sumatran Orangutan.

Only Relocations after SBI Merger

  • As per Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya, the State Bank of India may relocate some branches after the merger of its associate banks into its fold, but none of them will be shut down.
  • The country's largest lender is looking to add $120 billion (Rs 8 lakh crore) in assets after the merger of State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State bank of Travancore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Hyderabad and State Bank of Maharashtra, besides the Bharatiya Mahila Bank.

SBI Ties Up with Tata Housing

  • To cash in on the opportunity arising out of increase in housing allowance under the 7th Central Pay Commission, State Bank of India has tied up with Tata Housing targeting government servants and armed forces.
  • Under this partnership, government employees and defence personnel having SBI Salary accounts will get a better deal on TATA Housing Homes, should they avail a SBI Home Loan for the same.
