S. Korea Holds Largest Artillery Drills

  • South Korea's army conducted its largest-ever artillery drills near the tense border with North Korea.
  • A total of 300 artillery systems deployed by dozens of military units along the border began firing shells simultaneously in multiple directions.
  • The border between the Koreas is the most heavily fortified in the world.

Turkey Submits Israel Deal for Approval

  • Turkey submitted to the parliament a deal to normalise ties with Israel.
  • The agreement has been forwarded to the parliament for ratification before the legislative body goes into summer recess later this month.
  • In June, Turkey and Israel had signed a deal to restore their ties which hit an all-time low after the 2010 raid by Israeli commandos on a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship that left 10 Turks dead.

SBI Board Clears Merger of Associate Banks

  • In a bid to create global size bank, the board of State Bank of India approved the scheme of merger of five associate lenders and Bharatiya Mahila Bank with itself.
  • The central board of directors of SBI has accorded its approval to the scheme of acquisition of the State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Travancore and Bharatiya Mahila Bank Limited by the State Bank of India.
  • Later it also approved separate schemes of acquisition of State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) with SBI.

RIL Fined $380 Million

  • The Oil Ministry has imposed an additional penalty of $380 million on Reliance Industries and its partners for producing less than the promised quantity of gas from its Andhra offshore field in 2014-15.
  • The ministry imposes the penalty in the form of not allowing the company to recover part of its investment in the infrastructure for bringing the KG-D6 block into production.

Object Orbiting Sun in Backward Orbit Found

  • A mysterious 200-km wide chunk of ice has been discovered beyond the orbit of Neptune.
  • Bizarrely, this object is going around the sun in a backwards direction and its orbit is tilted by 110 degrees from the plane in which all planets stay.
  • The object has been named ‘Niku’, a Chinese word for "rebellious" by the international team of astronomers that made the discovery.

First Indian in an Olympics Badminton Final

  • P. V. Sindhu beat Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-finals of the women's badminton singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
  • She is the first Indian in an Olympics badminton final.

India’s First Medal at Rio

  • Sakshi Malik won bronze in the women's freestyle wrestling competition in the 58 kg category.
  • She is the first from the Indian contingent to win a medal for India.
  • In 2010 she won a bronze in the Junior World Championship and silver in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She made it to Rio after favorite Geeta Phogat failed to qualify.

Narsingh Yadav Gets a 4-year Ban

  • Narsingh Yadav`s Olympic dream seems to have come to an end with the Court for Arbitration for Sport upholding the World Anti Doping Agency`s appeal against the clean chit given to him in a doping violation case.
  • He has been slapped with the standard four-year period of ineligibility by the panel.
