Turkey Offers Russia Joint Operations Against IS

  • Turkey called on Russia to carry out joint operations against Islamic State (IS) in Syria, after crucial talks between Putin and his counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed at ending a diplomatic crisis.
  • Turkey has also carried out air and artillery strikes of its own against IS.

Bank of Baroda Q1 Net Dives

  • Hit hard by bad loans, state-run Bank of Baroda posted 60 per cent plunge in its first quarter net profit at Rs. 424 crore.
  • Total income declined to Rs. 11,877.91 crore in the quarter of 2016.
  • The massive decline in profit on year-on-year basis was due to higher provisions for bad loans and contingencies.

Aditya Birla Nuvo to Merge with Grasim

  • Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd. (ABNL) will merge with Grasim Industries Ltd in a bid to unlock shareholder value and create a $9 billion enterprise.
  • With the merger, the Aditya Birla Group decided to hive off its financial services business into a separate entity, which will be listed later.
  • The transaction which is subject to regulatory approvals would be implemented in two phases.

Longest-Lived Vertebrate on Earth

  • As per a new study, the Greenland shark is the longest-lived vertebrate on the planet.
  • The animal, native to the cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic, can live to at least 272 years, and possibly to the ripe old age of 500.
  • Some research had suggested they grow extremely slowly, less than half an inch per year, suggesting a life span well beyond those of other vertebrates.

New Chief Justice for Bombay High Court

  • The first woman Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Manjula Chellur, has been named the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
  • The transfer of Chellur, as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, is expected to take effect later this month.
  • She is the second woman Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. Justice Sujata Manohar became the first woman Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in 1994.
