Daily Ceasefire in Aleppo

  • According to the Russian Defence Ministry, there would be daily three-hour ceasefires in Syria`s Aleppo to allow humanitarian convoys to enter the city safely.
  • The pause in fighting would take place from 10 in the morning to one in the afternoon local time.
  • All military action, air and artillery strikes would be halted for that period, and that Russia, together with the Syrian authorities, was ready to help all interested organisations safely deliver humanitarian aid to Aleppo`s residents.

China Halts Nuke Processing Plant

  • China has suspended work on a $16-billion nuclear waste processing plant.
  • The decision was taken after thousands of local people protested against it. The local people are worried about the health risks from nuclear waste.
  • The move is seen as a major setback to China's image as a major power in the civilian nuclear energy business.

FDI Norms for NBFC Sector Liberalised

  • Expanding the list of NBFCs which can attract FDI, the Cabinet permitted foreign investment through automatic route in "other financial services", if they are under regulators like RBI and SEBI.
  • The present regulations on Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) stipulate that FDI would be allowed on automatic route for only 18 specified NBFC activities after fulfilling prescribed minimum capitalisation norms mentioned therein.
  • This is the third major relaxation in FDI norms since November 2015.

Tata Chemicals Sells Urea Business

  • Tata Chemicals agreed to sell its urea business to Norwegian giant Yara for Rs. 2,670 crore, setting the ball rolling in its plan to exit the fertiliser portfolio.
  • Tata Chemicals will transfer the Babrala urea plant in Uttar Pradesh and its related distribution business to the Pune unit of Yara.

Flooded Canyons on Titan Discovered

  • NASA’s Saturn probe spacecraft has discovered deep, steep-sided canyons on Saturn's moon Titan that are flooded with liquid hydrocarbons, spotted by Cassini.
  • It is the first direct evidence of the existence of liquid-filled channels on Titan, as well as the first observation of canyons hundreds of meters deep.

First Gymnast to Defend Olympic All-around Title

  • Kohei Uchimura snatched gold to become the first gymnast in 44-years to win back-to-back Olympic all-around titles.
  • Uchimura became the fourth man and the first since his compatriot Sawao Kato in 1972, to win successive gold medals in the event that tests skills across six apparatus.

Manoj Kumar Enters Pre-quarters

  • Former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Manoj Kumar defeated Evaldas Petrauskas in the 64 kg category boxing to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the Rio Games.
  • Manoj will next be up against fifth seed Uzbek Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in the pre-quarters.

Gujarat Gets New BJP Chief

  • Gujarat BJP appointed Jitu Vaghani, an MLA from Bhavnagar West constituency, as its state unit president in place of Vijay Rupani who became the Chief Minister.
  • Vaghani won the election as an MLA for the first time in 2012.
