UN Urges Aleppo Ceasefire

  • The United Nations has called for an urgent ceasefire in the divided Syrian city of Aleppo, where two million people lack access to clean water, putting people, especially children, at risk of disease.
  • Access is needed to deliver food and medical supplies and for technicians to repair electricity networks that drive water pumping stations, which were heavily damaged in attacks.
  • As per the UN the consequences will be dire for millions of civilians if the electricity and water networks are not immediately repaired.

Interest Rates Unchanged

  • Citing upside risks to the Reserve Bank's inflation target for March 2017, Raghuram Rajan maintained status quo on key rates at his last policy review meeting.
  • The Repo Rate at which RBI lends to the system has been retained at 6.5 per cent, while the Reverse Repo Rate which is paid to banks has been maintained at 6 per cent. The Cash Reserve Ratio will be at 4 per cent.

Indirect Tax Collections Up

  • Indirect tax collections rose by 29.9 per cent during the April-July period of the current fiscal to Rs. 2,71,719 crore.
  • Till July 2016, 34.9 per cent of the Budget Estimates of indirect taxes for 2016-17 has been achieved.
  • Indirect tax revenue includes collections from excise, customs and service tax.

‘Blue Whirl' Flame Discovered

  • Scientists have discovered a new fire, which shares the same 'whirling' characteristic of a tornado.
  • Known as the 'blue whirl' flame (because it lacks the yellow colour of traditional flames), instead of being destructive, could lead to cleaner ways of burning fuel, as well as helping in the clean-up of oil spills.

  • Manipuri human rights activist Irom Sharmila ended her 16-year-long fast and expressed desire to enter politics.
  • She licked some honey to mark the ending of her fast, the world's longest hunger strike.
  • Sharmila had begun her hunger strike in November 2000.
