Maldives' Coral Reefs Hit

  • A scientific survey suggest that more than 60% of coral in reefs in the Maldives has been hit by bleaching as the world is gripped by record temperatures in 2016.
  • Bleaching happens when algae that lives in the coral is expelled due to stress caused by extreme and sustained changes in temperatures, turning the coral white and putting it at risk of dying if conditions do not return to normal.

HDFC Life to Merge with Max Life

  • HDFC and Max Groups have decided to merge their life insurance businesses to create the biggest private life insurer with combine asset base of Rs. 1.1 lakh crore in a complex multi-stage share swap deal.
  • Under the merger deal, the Max Group will also get an Rs. 850 crore non-compete fee for not entering the life insurance business for the next four years.
  • The merger will make HDFC Life the largest private sector life insurer, replacing ICICI Prudential which currently is the largest private sector player.

Toyota Loses Business

  • Toyota has lost business worth around Rs. 1,700 crore due to the ban on diesel vehicles in the Delhi-NCR region.
  • The ban on sale of large diesel vehicles has impacted Toyota’s business badly, and have lost sale of around 8,500 units of the Innova and the Fortuner SUV.

Brathwaite New Captain of West Indies

  • West Indies named Carlos Brathwaiteas the new captain of the shortest format of the game.
  • He replaced Darren Sammy, who was controversially sacked.
  • Carlos will have his first assignment as the captain of the Caribbean team later this month, when West Indies play India in a two-match Twenty20 international series.
