Russia to Start Humanitarian Operation in Aleppo

  • As per reports, the Russian and Syrian militaries would start a large-scale humanitarian operation in Aleppo during which civilians and militants would be given the chance to leave the city.
  • Three safe corridors would be established by the Russian and Syrian militaries for civilians to leave what was once Syria`s largest city.
  • Shoigu also offered militants the chance to surrender, saying Russia had urged the Syrian government to pardon those who have not committed serious crimes.

Houthi Rebels to Govern Yemen

  • Iran-backed Shia Houthi rebels and the General People's Congress party of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh formed a supreme council to run war-wracked Yemen.
  • The council will manage state affairs politically, militarily, economically, administratively, socially and in security.
  • The aim is to unify efforts to confront the aggression by Saudi Arabia and its allies.

Sun Pharma Inks Agreement with Spanish Firm

  • Indian drug major Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, entered into a $50 million licensing agreement with Spanish firm Almirall.
  • Under the terms of the license agreement, Almirall will pay an initial upfront payment of $50 million.
  • the license agreement has a provision for possible co-promotion agreement at some point in the future, subject to certain conditions.

HDFC Q1 Net Profit Up

  • HDFC has reported a net profit of Rs. 1,871crore for the quarter ended June 2016. It is an increase of 37% over Rs. 1,361crore in the corresponding period last year.
  • The jump in profits includes the one-time pre-tax gains of Rs. 921crore following a stake sale in its non-life joint venture to its foreign partner Ergo.

  • India`s hopes for a permanent seat on the Security Council were dampened as the General Assembly decided to push further negotiations on reforms to the next session.
  • The four countries (India, Brazil, Japan and Germany) jointly work for expanding the Council`s permanent membership and mutually support each other for permanent seats and are known as G4.
  • The UN began in 1945 with five permanent and six elected members on Security Council when the world population was 2.35 billion and the organisation had 51 member nations.
