New Non-permanent Security Council Members

  • The UN General Assembly is set to elect five new non-permanent Security Council members to replace Spain, Venezuela, New Zealand, Malaysia and Angola in January 2017.
  • Bolivia is expected to take over the Latin American seat currently occupied by Venezuela and Ethiopia is the only candidate for Africa and will take over the seat Angola holds.
  • For the other three seats, Kazakhstan and Thailand compete for the spot reserved for the UN`s Asia-Pacific regional bloc, while Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden vie for the two available seats for the Western European and Others Group.

Two Companies Get SEBI’s Approval for IPO

  • Markets regulator SEBI has given approval to Hinduja Leyland Finance and test-prep player CL Educate to launch their initial public offerings.
  • The two companies had filed their draft papers with Securities and Exchange Board of India in March this year.
  • The equity shares of both companies will be listed on BSE and the National Stock Exchange.

India Joins Missile Technology Control Regime

  • India joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) as a full member, of which China awaits membership.
  • This is India's first entry into any multilateral export control regime.
  • India first applied for the membership in 2008 and China in 2004.
  • MTCR membership will enable India to buy high-end missile technology and also enhance its joint ventures with Russia.

Four Candidates Shortlisted to Succeed Rajan

  • The government has shortlisted four candidates to become the next governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
  • The four who have been shortlisted are: current RBI Deputy Governor Urjit Patel, former Deputy Governors Rakesh Mohan and Subir Gokarn, and State Bank of India Chair Arundhati Bhattacharya.
