Colombia Government Sign Ceasefire with Rebels

  • The Colombian government and the FARC rebel force signed a definitive ceasefire and disarmament agreement Thursday, one of the last steps on the path to ending their half-century conflict.
  • The deal establishes "a bilateral ceasefire and end to hostilities and the definitive laying down of arms.
  • Under the agreement, the FARC must hand over its weapons to United Nations monitors within six months.

North Korean Hails Successful Test of New Missile

North Korean leader hailed the successful test of a powerful new medium-range missile as a direct threat to US military bases across the Pacific.
According to Kim, it is a great event that significantly bolstered the North`s pre-emptive nuclear attack capability.
The Musudan has a theoretical range of anywhere between 2,500 and 4,000 kilometres, with the upper estimate covering US military bases as far away as Guam.

India Imports Cotton from Pakistan

  • India, the world's biggest cotton producer, has contracted to import 20,000 bales from Pakistan for shipment this month after Indian prices jumped.
  • The move is a role reversal from earlier this year, when Pakistan was buying cotton from India.
  • The landing cost of imported cotton is lower than local prices.

  • Anil Kumble has been named as the coach of the men's cricket team, with his one-year tenure to begin with India's four-Test tour of the West Indies in July.

  • China remained the last major obstacle in the way of India's membership bid in the Nuclear Suppliers Group as 47 of 48 members supported New Delhi's application at the group's special plenary session in Seoul.
  • China's stand might wreck India's chances this time if Beijing continues to hold out. But the fact that India has mounted such a huge diplomatic exercise will play to India's advantage going forward. All eyes now will be on the last minute role that the US and other big supporters of India play to help bring China around.
