Bashir Declares Ceasefire in Two States

  • Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has declared a four-month ceasefire in two states of Blue Nile and South Kordofan, where recent fighting between troops and rebels has left scores of casualties.
  • Bashir's forces have been battling the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North in the two states since 2011.
  • This gesture of goodwill from the government is to give the armed groups a chance to join the peace process and to surrender their arms.

Indian Lifters in 2016 Rio Olympics

  • Indian weightlifters Sivalingam Sathish Kumar and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu earned births to compete at the Rio Olympics in men's and women's weight categories.
  • Selection trials were held in Patiala to choose one lifter each from men's and women's category across all weight divisions after India had earned two quota places for the Rio Games at Senior Asian Championships at Tashkent.
