Maldives Opposition Creates Coalition

  • The Maldives opposition has announced a joint formation in order to work against the government.
  • According to opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) member and former Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem, a number of political parties have joined the Maldives United Opposition.
  • The Maldives United Opposition will strive to remove the government through legal and lawful means.

New Type of Meteorite Identified

  • Scientists have identified a completely new type of meteorite.
  • The 8 cm space rock is chemically distinct from any of the 50,000 other such objects held in collections.
  • Called Österplana 65, it was found in a limestone quarry in Thorsberg, Sweden.
  • Dating suggests the meteorite's parent body was involved in a huge collision in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter some 470 million years ago.

IIT-Madras in Asia's Top 50 Varsities

  • Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has broken into the top 50 of the 2016 Asia university rankings released by British company Quacquarelli Symonds.
  • It jumped 13 places from its position last year, IIT-Madras is ranked 43.
  • IISc-Bangalore (33), IIT-Bombay (35), IIT-Delhi (36) and IIT-Kanpur (48) were the other Indian universities in the top 50.

Dashar Maha Kumbh in Ganderbal after 75 Years

  • Darshar Maha Kumbh was organised in Kashmir after a gap of 75 years. The festival was held on the confluence of sacred Sindhu and Vitasta rivers in Ganderbal district of Kashmir.
  • Over 20,000 Kashmir Pandits thronged to the spot at Shadipora Sangam to take holy dip.
  • The place holds the same significance for Kashmiri Hindus as Haridwar, considered to be one of the holiest cities of religious importance to the community.
