Iraqi Troops in Southern Fallujah

  • Special Iraqi forces rolled into southern Fallujah. This is the first time in more than two years that government troops have entered the western city held by the Islamic State group.
  • The counter terrorism troops fought house-to-house battles with the militants in the Shuhada neighborhood.

Indo-US Commitment to Join Paris Agreement

  • UN Secretary-General welcomed steps taken by India and the US to join the Paris Climate agreement.
  • As of now, 177 Parties have signed, and 17 have ratified the climate agreement.
  • The Secretary-General called on all countries to accelerate their domestic processes to join or ratify the agreement to ensure its early entry into force.

HDFC Bank Cuts Lending Rate

  • Private sector HDFC Bank has cut lending rate by 0.05 percent, a move which will lower EMI for its new borrowers.
  • The new rate for two-year lending tenure has been reduced to 9.20 percent from 9.25 percent effective June 7.
  • The bank has also reduced Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rates.
  • MCLR is the new benchmark lending rate and replaces the base rate for new borrowers.

Names for New Chemical Elements

  • Names have now been proposed for the four new chemical elements added to the periodic table in January.
  • They are nihonium (with the symbol Nh), moscovium (Mc), tennessine (Ts), and oganesson (Og).
  • Until now, the quartet have been referred to simply by the number of protons in each atom - 113, 115, 117 and 118, respectively.
  • The names must go out to consultation for five months, but if there are no objections their confirmation should be a formality.

Maria Sharapova Gets Two Years Ban

  • Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has been banned for two years after committing an anti-doping violation.
  • An Independent Tribunal found that Maria Sharapova committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation and as a consequence has disqualified the affected results and imposed a period of ineligibility of two years, commencing from 26 January 2016.

Saina Enters Second Round of Australian Open

  • Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal entered the second round of the women's singles but P. V. Sindhu suffered an upset defeat in the opening round to crash out of the USD 750,000 Australian Open Super Series badminton tournament.
  • Saina had won the Australian Open title in 2014.
  • The seventh seeded Indian will clash with Malaysia's Jin Wei Goh in the second round.
