China and Pakistan Join Hands

  • China and Pakistan are closely coordinating moves to block India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
  • Beijing is using Pakistan's non-starter position with the NSG to block India's application in the name of parity, stating that it would either support NSG entry for both India and Pakistan, or none of them.

China Biggest Overseas Investor

  • China the world's second biggest economy trounced the United States in another aspect as Chinese companies inked the highest number of overseas deals so far this year. The number of deals, mostly purchase of foreign companies, since January amounted to $110.8 billion.
  • In fact, Chinese firms surpassed their own full-year record in 2015 when they spent $106.8 billion on foreign acquisitions.
  • The US has dominated the rankings in overseas acquisitions since 2007.

Air Pollution Rising at Alarming Rate

  • According to World Health Organisation, outdoor air pollution has grown 8% globally in the past five years.
  • While all regions are affected, fast-growing cities in the Middle East, south-east Asia and the western Pacific are the most impacted with many showing pollution levels at five to 10 times above WHO recommended levels.

India's Consumer Inflation Accelerates

  • As per government data, India's annual consumer price inflation accelerated to a stronger-than-expected 5.39 per cent in April from 4.83 per cent the previous month.
  • Food inflation picked up to 6.32 per cent in April from 5.21 per cent in March.
  • India's industrial output edged up 0.1 per cent in March from a year earlier, well below 2.5 per cent growth.

In Rarest of Rare Case

  • Both Rajya Sabha andLok Sabha passed the Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University Bill on the same day. Even President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to it the same day, making it a rarest of the rare case in Parliamentary history.
  • The legislation, meant for upgrading the existing Rajendra Agriculture University (RAU), in Bihar as a central university, gave the state its first central agriculture university.
