India to Tax Investments through Mauritius

  • Under a revised tax treaty inked to curb tax evasion and round-tripping of funds, India will begin imposing capital gains tax on investments routed through Mauritius from April next.
  • Under the amended treaty with Mauritius, for two years beginning in April 2017, capital gains tax will be imposed at 50 percent of the prevailing domestic rate.
  • The island nation was the biggest single source of foreign direct investment into India in 2014-15, accounting for about 24 percent of USD 24.7 billion foreign direct investment.
