Pakistan Rejects US Conditions to F-16s

  • Pakistan has rejected the conditions the US has attached with the sale of F-16 fighter planes.
  • As per Pakistan no conditions should be attached to the sale of F-16s because Pakistan plans to use the jets only for the purpose of fighting terrorists.
  • As per the US State Department Pakistan will have to pay from its own funds if it wants to buy F-16 fighter jets, after the US Congress last month withdrew funds for the deal to force Islamabad to act against the Haqqani network.

World's First Plant-eating Marine Reptile

  • A bizarre crocodile-sized hammerhead creature, that lived 242 million years ago, may have been the earliest known example of a plant-eating marine reptile.
  • The fossil, discovered in 2014, has a poorly preserved head, but seems to have a flamingo-like beak. As per scientists, the beak is actually part of a hammerhead-shaped jaw apparatus, which it used to feed on plants on the ocean floor.
  • The reptile's name is Atopodentatus.
  • This discovery solves the mystery of the strange-toothed animal, and also provides an example of the first herbivorous marine reptile.

India's Foreign Exchange Reserves Rise

  • As per RBI, India's foreign exchange reserves have increased by $1.52 billion to $363.12 billion in April 2016.
  • In the fourth week of April, foreign currency assets stood at $339.02 billion, gold $20.11 billion, special drawing rights $1.51 billion and the reserve position with International Monetary Fund (IMF) stood at $2.47 billion.

Temples Deposit Gold

  • Coming forth and supporting the government's gold monetisation scheme, eight temples have donated gold deposits under the scheme, the most coming from Tamil Nadu.
  • Four temples from Tamil Nadu, two from Maharashtra and one each from Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir have deposited their gold under the scheme.
  • About 2,820 kg of gold have been mobilised under the scheme.

Indian Women Wrestlers Qualify for 2016 Rio Olympics

  • Indian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik have qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
  • Vinesh Phogat was the first woman wrestler to qualify followed by Sakshi Malik.
  • In April 2016, Phogat was disqualified from the 1st World Olympic Qualifying event for being overweight. She weighed 400 gm more than what was stipulated to be eligible for the 48 kg category competition.
  • Sakshi qualified in the 58 kg category.
