Syrian Refugees Increase on Jordanian Border

  • As per the commander of Jordan's Border Guard Forces, the number of Syrian refugees gathered in remote desert areas on the Jordanian border and waiting to enter has risen to 59,000.
  • Some 5,000 Syrians have arrived in the last three days on the border.
  • As per aid organizations, Jordan must speed up entry procedures because the refugees live in dire conditions along the border.
  • The stranded refugees are gathered in two areas Rokban and Hadalat.

Canara Bank Revises Lending Rates

  • Public sector Canara Bank revised the lending rates based on the marginal cost of funds (MCLR) for May to 8.80-9.35 per cent.
  • Several other banks have announced changes in their MCLR rates.
  • The MCLR regime came into play as per the Reserve Bank of India guidelines that came to effect from April 1.
  • All banks need to follow MCLR system, a new uniform methodology to ensure fair interest rates to borrowers as well as to banks.

R-Power Gets Nod for LNG-based Power Plant

  • Reliance Power has been granted in-principle approval, by the Bangladesh Government, for the first phase of its project in Bangladesh.
  • The first phase of 750 MW power plant will be set up at Meghnaghat around 40 km from Dhaka.
  • The first Phase will be commissioned in 24 months from the zero date.
  • Reliance Power Limited is India's leading private sector power generation and coal resources company.

Four Judges Recommended for Supreme Court

  • The collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India has recommended appointment of four judges to the Supreme.
  • Those recommended for the Supreme Court are Allahabad HC Chief Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud, Kerala Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan, Madhya Pradesh Chief Justice A. M. Khanwilkar and senior advocate L. Nageshwar Rao.
  • The Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 31 judges, including the CJI.
  • At present, it is functioning with 25 judges. Even after appointment of the four judges who have been recommended there will be two vacancies.
