Re-launch of Syria Ceasefire

  • The UN Secretary-General has urged Russia and the United States to put Syria's ceasefire back on track and stressed that the new truce arrangements in place for two areas must be extended to Aleppo.
  • The UN chief noted the re-launch of the cessation of hostilities in Damascus and Latakia and stressed "the need to expand these arrangements to other parts of Syria.
  • He called on all international actors, in particular the United States and Russia to redouble their efforts in support of the Syrian parties to put the cessation of hostilities back on track.
  • More than 270,000 people have been killed since Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011.

Three Earth-like Planets Found

  • A team of scientists claim to have discovered three potentially habitable planets.
  • As per the scientists, the three are the best planets found so far for life outside our solar system.
  • The three orbit an ultracool dwarf star a mere 39 light years away, and are likely comparable in size and temperature to Earth and Venus.
  • The find opens up a whole new hunting ground for habitable planets.

Indian Weightlifters Earn Berths for Olympics

  • Indian weightlifters earned two berths for Rio Olympics. One each in the men's and women's sections.
  • Indian women lifters collected 100 points and stood third, while men earned 129 points and finished sixth at the Championships.
  • Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) will hold trials across all weight divisions to select two lifters, one man and one woman, to represent the country at the Olympics.

Vijay Mallya Resigns from Rajya Sahba

  • Vijay Mallya has resigned from Rajya Sabha, a day before Ethics Committee of the Upper House was set to recommend his expulsion.
  • The ethics panel had recommended termination of his membership from the House during a meeting in April.
  • Mallya is an independent member of the House from Karnataka.
  • He was elected twice to the Upper House - once in 2002 and again in 2010.
