NATO and Russian Officials Meet after 2 Years

  • The NATO-Russia Council has convened for the first time since 2014.
  • As per NATO Secretary-General, the meeting was important because of last week's incidents, when the US accused Russian warplanes of flying within a few meters of a US Navy war ship in the Baltic Sea.
  • Russian officials have blamed NATO members for the "lack of trust" that resulted in the lapse between meetings.
  • Relations between Russia and NATO members froze after Russia annexed part of eastern Ukraine and an armed conflict began between Ukrainian loyalists and pro-Russia separatists.

World's Oldest Message Discovered

  • A 108-year-old postcard offering a shilling in exchange for its return to an English marine research institute is now officially the world's oldest message in a bottle after being recovered in Germany.
  • As per the Plymouth Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association (MBA), the bottle had smashed the old record of 99 years and 43 days in the Guinness World Records.
  • It was discovered in Germany's North Frisian islands, 108 years and 138 days after it was thrown into the North Sea off the English coast in November 30, 1906.

India Wins Contract to Light up Kenya

  • Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems India has bagged a contract from Kenya Power & Lighting Company for approximately 8,000 distribution transformers 'Made in India' at the company's manufacturing facility in Hyderabad.
  • As per reports, the repeat order from KPLC for distribution transformers reinforces Toshiba Transmission India’s commitment to establish India as a manufacturing base and export hub for African countries.

Service Sector Growth

  • According to a joint report by CII-KPMG, the service sector has contributed about 61% of India's GDP in 2014-15.
  • The Indian service sector is growing strongly at approximately 10% per annum, making India the second fastest growing services economy in the world. India's share in global services exports was 3.2% in 2014-15, double that of its merchandise exports in global merchandise exports at 1.7%. India is currently placed eighth among the top ten exporters of service in the world.

India and China Border Solution

  • During the annual 19th round of boundary talks India and China have agreed to adhere to peaceful negotiations" to settle the border issue and reach a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution.
  • Both the leaders had an extensive, deep and candid discussion on the 3,488 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC), which remains undemarcated resulting in tensions between the two sides.

BJP Richest National Party

  • The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is the richest among all national parties, having clocked the highest income of Rs. 970.43 crore in 2014-15.
  • The Congress is the only national party not to have submitted its audit report for 2014-15 fiscal to the Election Commission.
  • Besides BJP, only Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national parties have submitted the audit reports on time.
  • The six national parties in the country are- the BJP, Congress, CPI-M, CPI, BSP and Nationalist Congress Party.
