First Sign of Coral Bleaching in Sydney

  • For the first time ever, coral population in Sydney Harbour is showing signs of bleaching due to warm waters.
  • The researchers discovered the first ever incident of 'paled coral colonies during routine monitoring at a number of locations in Sydney Harbour.
  • The researchers claimed that around 45% of harbour's hard corals has been devastated by warm waters.
  • Coral bleaching usually occurs when the temperature of sea water rises abnormally. Several factors are responsible for such warm waters like climate change, global warming, El Nino etc.

PF Old System to Continue

  • In a major relief to the salaried class, as the government has cancelled the new Provident Fund withdrawal norms which restricted workers from withdrawing the entire amount from the PF till they attend the age of 58 years.
  • Now, an employee can now withdraw the entire corpus accumulated under the EPF tax free including the employers' share of 3.67 percent.

Corporate Debt at Default Risk

  • According to a report, a whopping 16.1 percent or USD 178 billion worth of corporate credit in India is at risk of default, making the domestic banking system the worst in Asia in terms of bad loans.
  • According to BNP Paribas, of the total bank credit of USD 1,109 billion in the country, corporate debt worth USD 178 billion stands the risk of default.
  • India is followed by Indonesia and China with 7.2 percent and 6.6 percent of respective total bank credit at the risk of default.
