Greece Starts Emptying Border Camp

  • Greece has begun emptying the main migrant camp on its border with Macedonia, as the huge tide of refugees flooding into the country slows to a trickle following the EU-Turkey deal.
  • Around 400 refugees from the Idomeni camp were taken to other camps set up in northern Greece.
  • Before the deal the numbers arriving each day had numbered in the thousands.
  • Greek authorities have used the relative calm to put in place logistics to send people back to Turkey, including the deployment of 4,000 security personnel and asylum experts.
  • All new arrivals in Greece are being taken to registration centres set up on five Aegean islands. Those seeking asylum will stay there while their applications are considered by Greek and European officials.

Forex Kitty at All-time High

  • As per the Reserve Bank of India, India\'s foreign exchange reserves surged by $2.5 billion to touch an all-time high of $355.9 billion, on account of rise in foreign currency assets (FCAs).
  • FCAs, expressed in dollar terms, include the effect of appreciation and depreciation of non-US currencies, such as the euro, pound and the yen, held in the reserves.

Tata Firm Shuts Kolkata Office

  • Ahead of the assembly election, Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), a subsidiary of Tata Sons, has decided to shut its Kolkata office and merge with its existing set-up in Jamshedpur.
  • TCE, an integrated engineering consultancy solutions provider, offers engineering services in industry segments like power, nuclear energy, chemicals and infrastructure among others. It has delivered over 7,000 successful projects globally.
  • TCE, with units in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune has five decades of expertise in almost all key industry segments, but has not been doing well in Kolkata for some time.

  • The political crisis in Uttarakhand took a new turn with the Centre mulling imposition of President\'s Rule ahead of Monday\'s trust vote for Congress Chief Minister Harish Rawat.
  • The reported decision of Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal to disqualify the nine legislators from Congress who have revolted against Rawat and joined hands with BJP, would reduce the effective strength of the 70-member assembly to 61.
