Bulgaria Reinforces Border

  • Bulgaria deployed extra police and troops on its border with Macedonia in a joint exercise aimed at tackling a migrant influx.
  • The two countries are preparing for every scenario as thousands of migrants remain blocked at Idomeni, on the Greek-Macedonia border.
  • Bulgaria fears a large influx of migrants following the closure of the "Balkans route" from Greece through Macedonia and Serbia.

EU and Turkey Migration Deal Finalised

  • The European Union and Turkey have finalised their migration deal with an aim to jointly tackle the migration crisis.
  • All new irregular migrants crossing from Turkey into the Greek islands from March 20, 2016 are to be returned to Turkey, and this will take place in full accordance with EU and international law.
  • It is will be a temporary and extraordinary measure which is necessary to end the human suffering and restore public order.

Small Saving Schemes Interest Rates Slashed

  • The government has slashed interest rates on a couple of schemes that investors have been using to build their social security funds or saving for the rainy day.
  • The government has cut the interest rate on Public Provident Fund, Kisan Vikas Patra and other small deposit schemes.

49% FDI in Insurance under Automatic Route

  • The government has relaxed FDI norms for insurance sector by permitting overseas companies to buy 49 percent stake in domestic insurers without prior approval.
  • Currently, FDI up to 26 percent is permitted through automatic approval route. For FDI up to 49 percent, the approval of Foreign Investment Promotion Board is required.
  • There are 52 insurance companies operating in India, of which 24 are in the life insurance business and 28 in the general insurance.
  • PDP with 27 MLAs and BJP with 25 members had formed an alliance in March 2015 with Sayeed as CM, on the basis of an agenda of alliance which sought to address internal and external dimensions of the state.

Monster Stars that Outshines Our Sun

  • An international team of scientists has identified nine monster stars, which are bigger and brighter than our sun.
  • R136, which is only a few light-years across and is located in the Tarantula Nebula within the Large Magellanic Cloud, about 170 000 light-years away, hosts many extremely massive, hot and luminous stars.
  • Finding dozens of stars exceeding 50 solar masses, this new study was able to reveal a total number of nine very massive stars in the cluster, all more than 100 times more massive as the sun.

  • Saina Nehwal reached the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament being held at Basel.

PDP-BJP Alliance on Brink of Collapse

  • The PDP-BJP alliance in Jammu and Kashmir, fraying since the death of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, seems on the brink of collapse.
  • BJP sources indicated that the alliance may be all but over as the two sides failed to make fresh commitments after PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti made it clear that she wanted assurances on issues she considers central to her party\'s political fortunes in the Valley.
  • The BJP would not accept new conditions and the alliance should proceed on the basis of the understanding reached with Sayeed. Even if new arrangements were to be considered, these could be done after government formation and not as a set of pre-conditions.
