Tougher Sanctions on North Korea

  • The US President has signed into law the legislation to impose more stringent sanctions on North Korea.
  • The bill was passed overwhelmingly with a 408-2 vote by the House of Representatives. The legislation was approved by the senate earlier last week.
  • The legislation requires the Obama administration to sanction anyone involved with North Korea's nuclear program, luxury goods, money laundering and human rights abuses.

Make in India Week

  • India`s biggest manufacturing promotional, the Make in India Week, concluded with investment commitments of over Rs. 15 lakh crore.
  • Of the total investments committed, 30 percent are from foreign investors.
  • The event saw many corporate houses announce their plans to Make in India, notably, Mahindra and Mahindra, the Sajjan Jindal Group, Mercedez-Benz, Godrej, Posco, Vedanta, Ikea and Tatas.

Vodafone to Invest Rs. 6000 crore

  • Vodafone India, the country's second biggest telecom company, will invest Rs. 6000 crore in Maharashtra for capacity augmentation and new business initiatives.
  • The investments will help increase the number of people employed by the company in Maharashtra to 15,000 over the next few years.
  • There will be investments in capacity augmentation at a technology centre in Pune, which develops engineering and information technology products for Vodafone companies globally.
  • Vodafone signed an MoU with the Maharashtra Government regarding the investments on the sidelines of the Make in India Week.

Jupiter-like Planets Discovered

  • Scientists have discovered five new Jupiter-like planets that are similar in characteristics to Jupiter.
  • The newly discovered planets were designated as: WASP-119 b, WASP-124 b, WASP-126 b, WASP-129 b and WASP-133 b.
  • The orbital periods of the planets vary from 2.17 to 5.75 days and their masses range from 0.3 to 1.2 the mass of Jupiter, with radii between 1 to 1.5 Jupiter radius.

Sri Lanka Squad for the ICC World Twenty20

  • The Sri Lankan cricket board has announced its 15-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2016 as well as ICC World Twenty20.
  • Lasith Malinga was named the skipper of the T20I side for both the tournaments.
  • Angelo Mathews, Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath have returned for the shortest format of the game.
