Syrian govt. Accused of Exterminating

  • UN investigators accused the Syrian government of extermination in its jails and detention centres, saying prisoners have been executed, tortured to death or held in such horrific conditions that they perished.
  • As per a report by the UN commission of inquiry on Syria, thousands of detainees have been killed while being held by different sides in Syria`s brutal conflict since the violence began nearly five years ago.

PSU Banks Write off Bad Debts

  • A whopping Rs. 1.14 lakh crore of bad loans have been written off by 27 public sector banks (PSBs) during FY 2012-15, with the last fiscal alone witnessing a steep 53 percent rise in write-offs as part of the balance sheet clean-up.
  • As per RBI data, for the fiscal ended March 2015, public sector banks have written off loans amounting to Rs. 52,542 crore, an increase of 52.6 percent over the previous fiscal.
  • PSU banks have been witnessing a continuous surge in bad loans.
  • Concerned over mounting bad loans, RBI in consultation with the government is working on methodologies to clean up balance sheet of state-owned banks by March 2017.

Growth of India’s Economy Forecasted at 7.6%

  • India's economy is forecast to grow by 7.6% in 2015-16, marginally higher than the finance ministry's estimate.
  • Data released by the Central Statistics Office showed the economy grew 7.3% in the October-December quarter, slower than the previous quarter's upwardly revised 7.7% expansion.
  • While the economy slowed a little in the December quarter, growth was faster than China's 6.8% expansion in the third quarter. The finance ministry expects the economy to grow by 7.1-7.5% in the current financial year and then accelerate in the years ahead.

New Luminous Creatures in Red Sea

  • An international team of scientists has discovered a new species of luminous creatures in the Red Sea.
  • The new species were found to be living in colonies and emitting a green glow.
  • The unusual green glow of these hydrozoas was revealed in the peristomal area of the body.
  • The research also showed that the localisation of glow in certain parts of the body can help to distinguish different species of organisms that have identical structure.

BJP Sets Deadline for PDP Chief

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set a deadline for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti regarding a decision on government formation in the Valley.
  • BJP has asked the PDP to take a final call on government formation in J&K before the Parliament's Budget Session.
  • The state is without an elected government since January. Governor's rule was imposed in the state in January.
