Wal-Mart to Shut 269 Locations

  • As per reports, Wal-Mart Stores Inc would pull the plug on its smallest store format, Walmart Express, and close 269 locations as it contends with higher costs in its home market of the United States and disappointing results overseas.
  • The move includes Wal-Mart`s largest-ever single culling in the United States, where the company is closing 154 stores. The other 115 stores are in Latin America, including 60 in Brazil.
  • The closings come three months after Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon disclosed plans to review global operations and shut underperforming stores.

UK's Protected Blue Belt Expanded

  • The UK government has extended the coastal "blue belt" of protected marine areas.
  • The designation of 23 new Marine Conservation Zones mean that 8,000 square miles of UK waters now have environmental protection.
  • The designation of 23 new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) means that 20% of English waters are now considered protected. The sites range from the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds in the North Sea, down to Land's End in the South West.
  • The aim is to conserve habitats like coral colonies, geological features such as chalk reefs, and species such as the stalked jellyfish and spiny lobsters.

Softbank Will Accelerate Investments in India

  • Betting on India emerging bigger than China, Japan's SoftBank has invested $2 billion in Indian firms in the last one year and will look to scale up the investment to $10 billion in the coming year.
  • According to SoftBank Cahirman and CEO, In the next 10 years India will repeat the growth China saw in the last 10 years.
  • SoftBank had in 2014 announced plans to invest $10 billion in India over the next decade. It has already put in $627 million into online marketplace Snapdeal and smaller investments in property site Housing.com.
  • SoftBank in June had entered India's solar energy sector with a venture with Bharti Enterprises and Foxconn Technology Group of Taiwan.

Universe's Most Luminous Galaxy

  • New observations have revealed that an obscured quasar 12.4 billion light-years away which is known as the most luminous galaxy in the Universe is so violently turbulent, that it may eventually cast off its entire supply of star-forming gas.
  • After the observation the researchers found that the galaxy is so chaotic that it is ripping itself apart.
  • Evidence strongly suggests that this galaxy is an obscured quasar, a very distant galaxy with a voraciously feeding super massive black hole at its center that is completely obscured behind a thick blanket of dust.

Sex Ratio in Haryana Improves

  • The sex ratio in Haryana has shown an upward trend for the first time in 10 years, in December 2015, it has crossed the 900 mark with 903 girls per 1,000 boys.
  • Twelve districts have recorded sex ratio above the 900 mark in December, Sirsa topped the list where the number of girls stood at 999 per 1,000 boys.
  • The CM has set a target to achieve sex ratio above 950 within the next six months has now been set for the entire state.
