The World Bank has cut the global growth forecast for 2016 to 2.9 percent.
Developing economies are expected to expand by 4.8 percent in 2016, less than expected earlier but up from a post-crisis low of 4.3 percent in the year just ended. Advanced economies are expected to grow 2.1 percent this year, also lower than its June forest but up from the estimated 1.6 percent increase in 2015.
The emerging economies seem to be coming apart, with Brazil and Russia expected to remain in recession in 2016, while China and India forecasted to grow around 7 percent.
One-third of the world’s freshwater fish are at risk if dozens of large hydroelectric dams are built in the Amazon, Congo and Mekong basins.
If the dams are built, tropical freshwater biodiversity, which is at its most diverse in the three river basins, could be devastated.
Large dams invariably reduce fish diversity and block movements that enable migratory species to complete their life cycles. This may be particularly devastating to tropical river fisheries where many species migrate hundreds of kilometres.
For the first time in the history of India, contingent of any foreign country's army will take part in this year's Republic Day Parade. A contingent of the French Army, which is already in India for a joint military exercise, will take part in the parade along with Indian Armed forces.
This year French President Francois Hollande will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
This will be the fifth time that a French leader will be a Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations, the maximum number from any country so far.
