UN Sanctions Threat over North Korea Nuclear Test

  • The UN Security Council agreed to roll out new measures to punish North Korea after its announcement of a hydrogen bomb test that triggered global concern and condemnation.
  • With backing from China, Pyongyang`s sole major ally, the 15-member council strongly condemned the test and would begin work on a new UN draft resolution that would contain further significant measures.

Oil Slides below $33

  • Oil fell below $33 a barrel for the first time since April 2004 as a fall in Chinese shares rattled investors already concerned by near-record production and massive stockpiles of unwanted crude and refined products.
  • Oil prices have fallen by around 70 percent since mid-2014.
  • Brent fell more than 5 percent to a low of $32.16 before paring some of its losses.
  • However, oil`s rapid fall has made a prediction that Goldman Sachs made last year that crude could fall as low as $20 per barrel seem less outlandish than it then seemed.

Govt to Shut 3 Unviable HMT Units

  • After months of discussion, the government announced the closure of three unviable HMT units -HMT Watches, HMT Chinar Watches and HMT Bearings.
  • But the defunct units would be shut down by offering an "attractive" voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to the employees linked to 2007 pay scales.
  • With a cash assistance of Rs 427.48 crore, the three lossmaking subsidiaries of HMT, namely HMT Watches, HMT Chinar Watches and HMT Bearings, will attain closure after separation of about a thousand employees through attractive VRSVSS and settlement of their dues.

Renault India Registers 160% Growth

  • Renault India registered a growth of 160% with monthly domestic sales of 10,292 units in December 2015 as against 3,956 units in the same month of 2014.
  • In the calendar year 2015, Renault India sold 53,847 units compared to 44,849 units in the preceding year, registering a cumulative growth of 20.1%.
  • Renault India has substantially increased its sales and service network reach in India, from 14 sales and service facilities in mid-2011 to 200 currently.

India's Top 20 Entrepreneurs in 2015

  • Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal topped the list of entrepreneurs in India in 2015, beating stalwarts of Indian business like Anand Mahindra, Sunil Mittal and Chanda Kochhar among others.
  • At the Goonj India Index 2015, Sachin Bansal became number one entrpreneur of 2015 with 5.36 GPM while Uday Kotak was the last in the list with 0.87 GPM.
  • Others in the list are: Chanda Kochhar (4.39 GPM), Shiv Nadar (3.58 GPM), Rahul Yadav (3.38 GPM), Vishal Sikka (2.92 GPM), Lakshmi Mittal (2.39 GPM), Binny Bansal (1.96 GPM), Kumar Mangalam Birla (1.96 GPM), Narayan Murthy (1.96 GPM), Subhash Chandra (1.96 GPM), Ekta KapooR (1.68 GPM), K V Kamath (1.60 GPM), Anand Mahindra (1.30 GPM), Naina Lal Kidwai (1.30 GPM), Sabeer Bhatia (1.30 GPM), Sunil Mittal (1.30 GPM), Aditya Puri (1.07 GPM), Kishore Biyani (0.87 GPM), Sunil Bharti Mittal (0.87 GPM) and Uday Kotak (0.87 GPM).

Five Super-sized Stars Discovered

  • Eta Carinae, the most luminous and massive stellar system ever, is best known for an enormous eruption seen in the mid-19th century that hurled at least 10 times the sun's mass into space.
  • Using archival data from NASA's Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes, researchers have found twins of superstar Eta Carinae in other galaxies for the first time.
  • Located about 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina, Eta Carinae outshines our sun by five million times.

SP Sweeps District Panchayat

  • Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party got a major boost winning 60 of the 74 seats that went for polls. The BJP and the BSP suffered major setbacks as the former won no seat and the latter just one.
  • SP candidates won in 9 of the 10 districts while one candidate supported by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) - Pramila Singh - won from Mirzapur, winning 33 votes while her nearest rival - SP's Pairo Devi could garner only 10. SP candidates - Sudhir Paswan (Ballia), Virendra Yadav (Ghazipur), Ansha Yadav (Mau), Meera Yadav (Azamgarh), and Kajal Yadav (Gyanpur-Bhadohi) had already won the polls unopposed.
