BBC's Entire Network of Websites Crashes

  • BBC's entire network of websites and its iPlayer streaming service crashed after a large web attack by hackers.
  • Thousands of users complained on social media after getting an error message, saying there had been an "internal error" on one of the world's busiest news websites.
  • BBC suffered a DdOS a distributed denial of service attack.
  • A DdoS attack is an attempt to make an online service unavailable by overwhelming it with traffic from multiple sources.

HMT Reopens Plant

  • The beleaguered Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) factory in Ranibagh, which has been closed since the last two years, will start functioning from Friday in order to complete its pending order of watches estimated to be worth Rs. 1.5 crore.
  • HMT had received orders for 5,500 watches from our Bengaluru office in December, which have to completed by March 2016.

India's External Debt Rises

  • India's external debt edged up by 1.7 per cent during the first six months of the ongoing fiscal to USD 483.2 billion at the September-end.
  • As per the Finance Ministry the rise in external debt during the period was due to long-term external debt particularly commercial borrowings and NRI deposits.

RBI Fixes 9.45 % Base Rate for NBFC-MFIs

  • In line with falling lending rates, Reserve Bank of India fixed base rate or the minimum lending rate at 9.45 percent for NBFC Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs).
  • Base rate is the minimum lending rate below which an MFI cannot lend.

Brain Activity of Worms Recorded in 3D

  • Scientists have developed a new method to record 3D footage of neural activity in nearly the entire brain of a free-moving animal. This development could help better understand how neurons coordinate action and perception in animals.
  • Researchers used the technique to capture the first 3D recordings of neural activity in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a worm species 1 millimetre long with a nervous system containing a mere 302 neurons.

First Indian Bowler to Top ICC's Year-end Ranking

  • Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ended the year 2015 as the top ranked Test bowler in ICC rankings.
  • This makes the Chennai spinner the first Indian bowler after Bishen Singh Bedi to achieve the feat of finishing the year on top.
  • Ashwin and Jadeja are the only two Indians in the top 10 rankings of the Test bowlers.

Raghavan Returns after Completing Tenure as HC

  • Outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan TCA Raghavan crossed over from the Wagah border to return to India after serving over two years as India's envoy in Islamabad.
  • He was appointed High Commissioner to Pakistan in June 2013.
  • Raghavan in his long career has also served as Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad from 2003 to 2007. He worked on diplomatic assignments in the UK, Bhutan and Kuwait since he joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1982.
  • He is being replaced by Gautam Bombawale who is currently serving as ambassador to Bhutan.
