Record 12,000 Candidates for Iran Elections

  • More than 12,000 candidates have signed up for the Iranian parliamentary elections due to be held in February, the most since the Islamic revolution in 1979.
  • The number of people who registered to stand was up nearly 70 percent compared with the previous legislative polls in 2012.
  • Women accounted for 11 percent for the 290 seats available, up from eight percent last time.

Forex Reserves Down

  • According to RBI, after rising for two consecutive weeks, India’s foreign exchange reserves fell by $1.4 billion to $351.106 billion in the week ended December 18 on account of a fall in foreign currency assets.

Coal India Output Up

  • The coal output by state-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) crossed 9 per cent over last year’s production adding that there is “still a very long way to go” amid the PSU eyeing the one billion tonnes production target.
  • Coal India’s production had jumped 8.8 per cent to 321.38 million tonnes (MT) during April-November period of the current fiscal.
  • CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal production.
