Saudi Voters Elect 20 Women Candidates

  • According to results, Saudi voters have elected 20 women for local government seats.
  • The 20 female candidates represent just one per cent of the roughly 2,100 municipal council seats.
  • Around 7,000 candidates, among them 979 women, competed in the election for a seat on the municipal councils, which are the only government body elected by Saudi citizens.

87% of Himalayan Glaciers Stable Since 2001

  • As many as 248 of 2,018 or 12.3% of Himalayan glaciers are "retreating" while 18 are advancing. However, a majority or about 86% of glaciers have remained stable.
  • A study had also inferred that the number and rate of glacier retreat have come down in the last decade compared to the results of other studies conducted before 2001.

SEBI Attaches PACL’s Assets over Refund Failure

  • Market regulator SEBI has attached the assets of PACL, its promoters and directors for failing to refund about Rs. 60,000 crore that the company had been raising illegally from five crore investors since 1997. PACL's illegal fund mop-up is the biggest collective investment scheme in the country that has come under the SEBI scanner.
  • SEBI has started recovery proceedings against Chandigarh-based PACL and its promoters and directors.

Inflation Rises to (-)1.99% in November

  • Deflationary trend eased in November with WPI inflation moving up to (-)1.99 per cent as food articles, led by pulses and onion, turned costlier.
  • This is the 13th month in a row that the wholesale inflation remained in the negative territory. It has been in the negative zone since November last year.

Viswanathan Anand Finishes 9th in London Classic

  • Viswanathan Anand played out a draw with Anish Giri of Holland to finish ninth in the London Classic while Magnus Carlsen of Norway won the event.
  • Anand ended the Classic on 3.5 points out of a possible nine, winning one, losing three and drawing the remaining five games.

India Ranks 130th in Human Development Index

  • The United Nations Development Programme in its latest report has placed India`s Human Development Index (HDI) value for 2014 at 0.609, as the country climbed five spots to 130 in a list of 188 countries and territories.
  • Between 1980 and 2014, India`s HDI value increased from 0.326 to 0.609.
  • The HDI is a summary measure of assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development, long and healthy life, access to knowledge and decent standard of living.
